Things I love Thursday

Today is Thursday – Things I love Thursday, to be exact. Here are things – rather, men – I like this Thursday. This should reflect my current aesthetic obsession :)

Mr. Hudson, whose music I have been in love with! Check out the lounge version of Supernova below.

I’ve been in Boston for about 24 hours now and have seen a lot of sights. My favorite place thus far is the North End neighborhood – Boston’s own Little Italy. San Diego and San Francisco have Little Italy neighborhoods, but Boston’s is true Italian. The streets were narrower, the people more frenzied, shop owners and neighbors on the street spoke Italian or heavily accented English, the locals had distinct Italian features. I found this to be absolutely amazing since I’m from California, land of mutts.

So have you noticed? My new banner is up! I’m going to work on some CSS to polish off my design, but this is 90% the end product. There will also be some usability tweaks to make things like links in my entries more clickable. Everything is coming along fine except for the fact that this “pink” theme is actually a lavender color. Some color blind designer out there needs to quit his job.

Now that the commissioned banner is complete, I’ll share the story of how it came along. A while back, a cute pink and brown haired girl commented on my hair photos on Flickr and soon, we became friends on Twitter and the like. I saw her awesome sketches and illustrations, which were my “style” and decided that this was the girl who was going to illustrate a banner for my blog :) So with a few silly ideas to start with, San got started sketching away.

sketch

San’s first sketch was of a few ideas I emailed her and we both liked the silliest one best – Wendy floating with an umbrella with San Francisco and a huge rainbow and clouds behind her. It started getting very exciting when I saw her illustration come to life in stages – lines, color swatches, monkeys being drawn in..

And then you have the end product, which you can see in my header! Thanks so much to San Smith for the commission and I’ll definitely be referring all my illustration-needing friends to her! :) On a related note, I am going to print moo cards with this banner on the back. I just have to decide how much and what information I want printed on the cards!

Over the weekend, we had a party to celebrate our new roommate, Dean Martin. Dino’s going to be living at our place for a while since the mild San Francisco climate lends to him not melting into a puddle of wax. Friends got dressed up and came over for the cocktail party with some Ol’ Blue Eyes playing in the background. Our neighbors across the hall were having a housewarming party with a keg the same night and a sign was posted in our hallway, “<– Rat Pack Party, Shit Show (aka housewarming) –>” so as not to confuse party goers. A photo from the party, with Dean Martin and my friends Susi and Yann visiting from Hamburg:

Oh and you know that saying? You find things when you aren’t looking for them anymore? Yeah. I’m pretty happy with things I found when I didn’t think I was looking :)

One in ten

Despite having been on the verge of sick on Friday, I had an action-packed weekend! I showed a visiting high school friend and her boyfriend around San Francisco, visited the New People jpop store in Japantown, ate lots of delicious food, saw Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea (???????) and went to a brunch for a dear friend who is moving away. Some photos from the weekend that may or may not have to do with the list I just wrote:

CinnaCat
CinnaCat being awfully cute

Nails
Pink and black nails!

My head
A self-portrait I was trying to take because I got my awesome winter rain earrings from my friend Jo (check out her awesome Etsy stuff).

In my last post, I mentioned that I’m working on finishing up my blog design.. I commissioned the awesome (and pink haired!) San Smith for a blog header! I sent San some ideas in writing and she’s come up with some great sketches and direction. I can’t wait to put this up! Here’s a sneak peek at some of her sketches:

And my head :)

My head

* Edit: my friend Casey took one look at this and said, “She even captured your smug sense of self-righteousness. You know what you’re thinking? ‘He doesn’t know what the fuck he’s talking about, but I’m just going to keep smiling. And judging.’” Hahahaha.

Of course, all sketches are copyrighted by San.

Things I Love Thursday

// August 6th, 2009 // No Comments » // Everyday, Photos, Stuff I Like

Here’s a real Things I Love Thursday, this time inspired by San Smith, an awesome pink haired graphic artist I met on Flickr!

Rock Candy Jewelry
Rock candy inspired jewelry by Mctega. I love the fine chains used to balance out the asymmetrical, chunky shapes of these colorful pieces!

Panda bread
Panda bread because everything you eat should be as cute as you feel. I’ll get around to baking this soon.

Drykorn
The Drykorn Autumn/Winter 09 collection, which follows the theme of “English Countryside meets Streets of London.” I love the use of plaid, the cut that’s pretty yet casual and the photographs (models + location!). It doesn’t hurt that the Drykorn website is titled, “Drykorn for beautiful people” :)

Maiko Takeda Cat Mask
Maiko Takeda’s cinematography project which is a series of jewelry/masks that cast photographic shadows on the bearer. The cat mask looks fantastic!

Lily Allen for Chanel
Lily Allen for Chanel – not because I like Chanel, not because I like Lily Allen (and I do a lot), but because of the frills in the outfits she’s wearing. The frilly neckline on the left? The cuffs on the right? Yes, please!

Lady Gaga Hair Bow
Of course I love Lady Gaga’s hair bow. It reminds me of Sailor Moon’s bun hair.. There’s speculation that she’s wearing a bow shaped hair piece, rather than having tied up her own hair. Either way, I think it’s fantastic and makes me wish I had long hair. I would totally wear a hair bow to work daily.

Other things I loved this week: good friends you can be honest with even if it makes you sound awfully superficial, curling my hair and discovering the best technique after a few attempts, full moon against the San Francisco cityscape, Yelp Elite events for free food and drink, standing on a balcony at said Yelp event and feeling the wind whip through my hair, having my effort and work be verbally appreciated, beautiful clouds haunting the sky in August, making steps in living up to my own aesthetic, realizing that I’m maturing because loud is not always the only way to be seen.

I’m attempting to post more.. I think having topics like things I love Thursday may help :)

Things I love Monday!

// July 13th, 2009 // 1 Comment » // Everyday, Photos, Stuff I Like

As a variation of Things I Love Thursday that Gala Darling and many others post on a weekly basis, I’m going to post a Things I Love Monday, reflecting on the things I loved in the past week (and I loved a LOT of things this past week!). I think it’s a good way to start a Monday, despite it being well into the day already.

Leg of lamb

The leg of lamb JB came over to make on Wednesday. It was a learning experience because I epically failed at cooking lamb for my family over the holidays and tasted great! I still have leftovers that I will finish off tonight. We also had a pureed carrot soup, pear salad and delicious dessert from Citizen Cake that evening. Cooking at home with good friends is definitely one of my favorite hang out activities.

Going to new bars with old friends. I spent Friday evening catching up with two old friends and having a blast listening to a great cover band at Grant & Green, my new favorite pub/live music neighborhood.

Alley

San Francisco. I came across this alley near the Chinatown & Financial District borderline and it reminded me of how much I love this city. I also caught a rainbow in the Financial District that evening :)

scarf

Alone time. When I first moved to the city, I spent a lot of time wandering around by myself. With all the noise going on in everyday life these days, I find it very refreshing to spend a day walking around the city by myself. I walked down to Union Square, did some shopping and sightseeing and had a splendid time. I ended up buying this scarf at Burberry. It is now permanently wrapped around my neck!

Sailing with friends on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. This speaks for itself, doesn’t it? After sailing, some great food and silliness ensued. I adore these friends and days like this that will linger in memory :) Some of the billion photos we took ensue:

And those are all the things I loved this week. Hope the coming week will be just as fantastic :)

I like me

// July 7th, 2009 // No Comments » // Everyday, Stuff I Like

I recently met myself in another person. It’s endlessly fascinating, and self-validating to a degree, to meet someone so similar to you and actually like them. We live rather parallel lives, dabble in the same indulgences, play the same characters, share similar thoughts.. One of the most unsettling things about meeting yourself (someone so similar) is actually being able to ask yourself the questions that have always been on your mind and not getting the answers you usually give yourself to keep yourself complacent. You get the answers you would never tell yourself. Two things come of that: 1) you have to figure it all out again, 2) luckily this time you have someone who really understands to talk it over with. And that’s pretty much what I’ve been up to lately, how about you?

These are now mine. I love Ben Sherman’s women’s shoes.

Two things I loved today

// June 25th, 2009 // No Comments » // Everyday, Stuff I Like

I’ve always had the ability to fall in love another’s words.. But never have been good at picking up myself after that. Not even good at stopping myself from falling in love with words. Too bad words aren’t people. Two songs & thus, lyrics, I fell in love with today:

Freemasons – Uninvited

Like any hot blooded woman
I have simply wanted an object to crave..

Coheed and Cambria – Wake Up (acoustic)

I’ve earned through hope and faith
On the curves around your face
That I’m the one you’ll hold forever..

What I want in a boyfriend

// June 23rd, 2009 // 3 Comments » // Everyday, Relationships, Stuff I Like

I guess I can admit that I’m starting to try to date again, albeit half-heartedly. One of my old college ex’s whom I was friends with after the fact always has good advice about dating. He told me to make a list of what I’m looking for in a boyfriend and then stick to it – the idea that having a list would make me not settle for less than who I was looking for. Today, I read What I Want in a Partner on Jolie Odell’s blog and she made a call for such lists. So I’m going to create a new list and post it here. Kind of scary because I’m sure this will come back and bite me in the near future :P

The list:

  • I want someone who is into tech and/or design (the Valley!) because that’s what I’m passionate about and I want someone who will excitedly stand in line with me for an iPhone launch or debate about A/B tests vs. multivariate tests.
  • I want someone who is as kind as he is tough.
  • I want someone who is certain of himself.
  • I want someone with good hair. This was important when I was 16 and it still is now.
  • I want someone who knows how to truly listen and can empathize with others. I don’t think you can listen to others until you can listen to yourself, so this says a lot about a person.
  • I want someone who knows how to communicate VERY clearly about their feelings and with others. I like to talk about things up and down, in and out, until every angle and crevice has been explored. THEN the topic is over.
  • I want someone who likes my crazy — I think everyone has some kind of crazy, we just look for the kind we like.
  • I want someone who is curious: about the world, about human nature, about mundane things, about me, about everything.
  • I want someone who likes to be over-stimulated by aesthetics.
  • I want someone who is intelligent, motivated and ethical in the ways that I am not.
  • I want someone who is comfortable with their (at times?) childish heart and spirit.
  • I want someone I share physical, mental and emotional chemistry with. Being a Scorpio like myself doesn’t hurt ;)
  • I want someone who appreciates, accepts and cherishes me for who I am (the ex mentioned above suggested this one!).
  • I want someone who can let go and laugh with me. I often find things funny and the course of most of my good friendships is in laughter.
  • I want someone who, while he has habits, can drop them when appropriate and be spontaneous. Live.
  • I want someone who can communicate without words.
  • I want someone who will respect them.
  • I want someone who is logical and rational, but still balanced by his passion.
  • I want someone who will inspire me to become a better person, who will likewise be inspired by me.
  • I want someone who can really/still love.

That is all I can think of for now :) I’m quite happy with this list. Thank you for the inspiration, Corey and Jolie!

Third Eye Blind

// June 19th, 2009 // No Comments » // Everyday, Stuff I Like

I saw Third Eye Blind play for free tonight as park of San Jose’s summer park concert series. Tonight is in serious competition with last night as best night this week thus far. Last night I went to Absinthe with a friend I haven’t seen in a while and had delicious drinks. He’s also completely gorgeous. I’ll love a man for his manners and mannerisms.

Possibly one of my favorite Third Eye Blind songs (stupid still YouTube video, but the song is there):
